A Mix Of Both

As I get further into my own series, still don't have a working title besides Star-Spangled Banner but it will come to me at some point. I found I'm a mix of, "Gonna write this chapter." Vs some pre-plotting. In fact, I have most of the big hits plotted. The character moments are mostly unplanned b/c even with rouge drafts, some things just pop out like crazy little bunnies.

  • I find I go wide, like a big panoramic view. Then as writing develops more I dive into the Immediate MC pov level. Some of this will probably change in editing but the biggest thing, just keep writing.
  • I put all the chapt headings in Word Doc before I even write the chapters themselves. Sometimes I even go out of order. But that's ok.
  • Write notes separate from the rough draft, along with page numbers, so when you go back to edit, with new skills acquired, you can apply it. :D
  • I find that I'm very over excited to get to the "Cosmic Fun times" aspect of the series but in doing so, I've had to put a break somewhat, gotta remember to add those quiet character building moments in between all the space adventure. XD
  • I have excel sheets, post-it notes, basic world building references.
  • One giant learning experience. And unlike work I find it fun.
I have the tent poles, the basic foundation, I just find I fly from one area to another as inspiration strikes. I got the wheel, the other little details are like the spokes in that wheel.

I find not only am I writing book one, but the entire rough draft for the whole series, what a world! Gonna have to add more of those tack squares soon. :P

The tent poles are somewhat vague because like anything else, things can change and like Babylon 5, you gotta be ready for a block to fall off. Gives me an appreciation for people that stick with it. A dream given form. Heh.

I don't take everything as "YOU MUST X" but I try to see what fits the most with how I write. So there's that. But one thing is very important that isn't stated enough. Just write. You will get better with practice, practice, practice. It's ok if the notes aren't singing in angelic harmony. You will get there.

Oh and read, read, and more reading. Esp in the genre you are aiming for. So you can ID the tropes and some of the conventions easier.

Cause everyone has a different writing process or formulas. No single process will fit you. Only you can start more plot fires. There's guidelines to keep one on the path but only you can walk it. So sayeth the fortune cookie of readerness.

When I'm writing  I ask myself:

  • why are you doing this?
  • having fun?
  • Yes, are you having fun? And enjoyment?
  • If its feeling like work, step away for a while, cause it should be as entertaining for you as it will be for the reader.

Even though I wasn't much into Marvel growing up, Mr. Lee puts words to what I feel. Esp since I've started writing. The writing should be just as enjoyable as the reading. I'm glad I am really having a blast making my series. It's at the heart of any writer's motivation. IMHO.
