- Find other readers that really enjoy the same tropes and trappings you do. Be it pulps, sci fi, space opera, fantasy. We readers have to try to network together.
- As I see it, the biggest hurdle: Building your reader base. Biggest for Readers, finding that book or series you will keep hitting up, like a beloved favorite.
- Most readers don't seem to go out of the way to look beyond what's "The Hottest" commodity. So its like trying to light a signal flair in the deepest part of the ocean.
- We gotta have teamwork. It makes the dream work. It's why I try my best to find and purchase fun books.
- Its like a seesaw. How to get the genre enough spotlight to grow it. I got my bookmas idea from Monster Hunter and his book bombs.
Genre readers, we have to start pulling our weight, we can be just as vital as a writer putting out their own library of books. It takes time and energy but if you really love a genre, even little things like blogs, posting links to blogs on facebook, putting up a basic author page on goodreads, (even if readers don't make that a main avenue, the net is important.)
It doesn't even have to be super active: Just keep linking back to your main hub of activity or your books. Extend the net.
That's why I've been going back to old forums I'm in and I started linking my blog, just to get more eyes on it.
- I want to get a decent mic and start a podcast, maybe 4-10mins long, to kinda link/promote books I like. Most book type podcasts follow the bigger fish in publishing. Even in the indie sphere because that gets the most hits. IE: they mostly canvas the top 10 or 20 in their market. Or do book to movie comparison vids. And thats mostly in the trad sense. Not too many indie series get the notice level to get on the small or big screen.
I guess the most important thing for now is to share what I like to read with others. Cause even before all this, even I would mostly buy and read books that were in my feed based on: Well if you've read from this writer, how about this book? In the past. Now amazon just sends out stuff that tries to canvas too much area and doesnt pin point like it used to. Or what's new in the top 100. Which usually isnt something I am interested in, considering the state of "The Search" nowadays.
I'm just one reader but sometimes I wonder if that's how a decent portion of readers feel. How to find the stuff and enjoy it.
So a List:
- share what you like, forums, discords, IRL: the Misadventure, update profiles.
- Podcasts, Vidlogs, Blogs, Network with other Genre Eaters.
- How many of us are Whale Readers or Standalones or Series or Dabble with multiple genres.
- We can help build bases for writers.
- Bookclubs, Online or otherwise.
- If we want to see more books in a particular vein, we have to put our money up for it, so in turn that writer will continue to grow. Its a balance. Writers, dont give up. Readers! Don't give up either. Help each other unearth new favorites.
