Cause when it exploded in the book sphere back in 2014 into 2015, I def. took a gander. Find books that entertain. Read stuff you agree with. Read stuff you disagree with. My own journey:
My adventures with the Hugos/Gamergate/ect: A interesting conundrum.
As I understand things most people, to convince them to whatever side, usually have bullet points they cover. That’s why I feel that the Hugos stuff and what’s happening with GG wont be going anywhere any time soon. Without talking to people and always assuming X side is completely right, doesn’t that cause people to put on blinders? Even though I might not agree with the good portion of people I follow on tumblr about various politics, I do appreciate seeing their opinions and then investigating the situation. Right now I feel the Pro side does have more fact ammo on their side, even if the emotions are important, usually its facts that will sway people. Generally that is. Politics and any movement have so much muddy water its hard to tell fact from photoshop from opinion sometimes.
Sad puppies wants at its core: Diverse and fun novels to rejuvenate the genre. They want to promote people that wouldn’t have a chance to be noticed. From what I gather they feel that SFF has stagnated with books that showcase diverse ideas but its bland. Like reading a tech manual. Must hit all current social issues bullet points.
The Established Hugo side: Wants to showcase Diverse writers that they feel merit the most attention. But its a gated elite community that even I as a reader didn’t know how exclusive til Brianna Wu went on the warpath. The only voices heard will be the ones they consider most important, so “No vote” to throw upstarts out. Unless its upstarts we agree with.
This is just my opinion. Both povs have their drawbacks and merits. They both want more diverse books and writers on the field but have different opinions on how that should be done. Again after digging into various articles both for and against, I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe the Hugos do need a revamp. Combine the best ideas from both camps.

Base assumptions that is. That’s why I do follow people with various opinions. Because my base assumptions about everything need to be challenged. Living in an echo chamber won’t allow me to grow. Blinders don’t help anyone. In my opinion.
Again its been a while since I’ve really dug into anything with a researching bent. But maybe I should do that more often. Esp. with things I care about.

*I haven't used Tumblr in a while. Mainly got into it because there was so much art guides, esp about hands, because at the time I was trying my best to get into drawing again. Ill say this much, even there, until the great tumblr vs 4chan thing happened, I kept myself in the closet politics wise until things really started going down the road to "well this place is pretty much dead." I did eventually make a side politics thing but tumblr really wasnt too useful for that. Since, like twitter, they loved to ignore you anyway.
Plus even I had my cringe moments on that site. It took a while to really stop caring about what other people thought and just enjoy myself. Now I have my blog for various hobbies and political side adventures. If I want to. That is pretty freeing in and of itself.
As you can see, I went from being confused to gradually having the light bulb turned on. I didn't even realize just how badly books had turned. Going from something that was awarded based on actual impact to "Well you have the right skin and body parts for the job!"
Guess the TL'DR is: Even when things explode everywhere most normies will likely ignore it. Hell, it took the arms race between Trad Hugo Gate Keeping Fart Sniffers vs the Sads and Rabids for me to take notice.
Nowadays I have a much more informed awareness of exactly what is going on. Plus I don't hide my political leanings as much online anymore. LoL version of Political Compass: Purple Area "1776 this Bitch." :P I used to have the best compass pic but I lost the damned thing on the other computer. Ahh well. This one will have to do.
Now back to regular book hunting. I might not be on top of the culture war every minute. Cause that can wear one out but this is what blogs are useful for too.
