Currently Reading Updates: Skyward

I've read a few chapters of Skyward. (Basically read the sample to see if it would fit my wheelhouse enough)

But didn't start the audible until the 3rd book hit. (I usually wait for a series to have a few books before I start reading.)

 

Big Points: Listened to 13 chapt so far.

Spensa is a bit too hot headed. I usually don't go for teen characters as much these days. This mainly interested me because of the mishmash of sci fi elements. BUT!

I like Quirk. Sweet southern lady and the audible is on point for that. My writer brain tells me that they want the humans to stay on the surface/ground cave system of the planet. 

(Might have a collection of aliens keeping them there. But so far its one race attacking. A different kind of containment/Uplift Protocol here. :P Since it looks like they could have KOd this planet a looong time ago. Maybe they tried and the thing shielding everyone is in the debris floating around the planet?) 

I think Spensa has a legit connection to stars or something that governs them because she has a few "listen to the music of the spheres" moments. Her dad is a def. red herring for whatever the higher ups know. (Military wise.) 

Don't think he ran from the Fight in the opening. I think he was activated. (Possible Hybrid)

The First citizen people from the OG Civilization Earth ships? They def. aren't telling the general populous everything. Decent Pacing. Spin and Rig will probably repair or salvage something plot worthy from that ancient yet advanced starship. (Of USA or Western Design since words are in English)

Spin will probably get romantically involved with Jerkface. They display the tropes of this. 

I am more legit invested in finding out why these humans are here on that planet rather than on a outer colony attachted to Earth. 

Either its Lost, Destroyed, or so far along in history people do not remember where the home galaxy is.

Sunday Break Day: Sex Interludes in Books

 This picture explains it all for me but Ill do some other bullet points.

Anita Blake's later books exemplify this adage. Less is more with INTIMATE setups.

Here's an example from Uplift Protocol.

Implied setup. See? No squick factor involved. I do the same for other characters. Like King Elias and his wife. They woke up, in the nude but it was implied, not directly stated.

You can use a light brush on "Well Bang! OK?!" Which more "ADULT" oriented stuff would get this. There are very few people that can tackle the Insert P into P setups with any kinda nuance or class. So that's why I avoid direct on page setups. 

The Big Points:

• Unless its a BIG ROMANCE PRIMARY OR EROTICA! the bumping uglies setup doesn't move the plot forward in the least. 
• Most ways people implement sex in books is cringe at best. Meme worthy. If lucky. Or Adventures in Awful: (Om King anyone?) Here or Bit chute: Here
• No matter the medium: Most X rated setups feel tacked on. 
• The few decent ones I can recall? Movie wise that is: Terminator 1, Somewhere in Time

I find as I get older: I want more classy setups. All of this is just one FL woman's preferences and opinions.

Book Search: The Salad Continues!

 

 

I've decided the best way to use amazon while searching is not to be logged in. When I find someone I like Ill go back in, follow them/amazon author page, then back out again because the algorithm will put the reader into a grotto of the same 200 books. Along with the same sponsored stuff over and over again.

A MishMash of Different Things!

Started Feb off well. The output on Uplift Protocol is rising because I am trying to stay 6+ Issues ahead of releases. So that's why January had so many hits. Even though I technically started in near the end of December. (As far as book 2 went) WOOO! MORE PULP SPEED AHEAD!

Speaking of Pulp! Yakov's newest project got funded so lets see if we can reach some additional goals.

Happy to help in any way to keep this going. For audible: Narnia collection. Just finished the Magician's Nephew. CS Lewis has very fast paced writing. Hardly any extra exposition or descriptive detail. Just the way I want it nowadays. (I'd rather use my imagination rather than have it spelled out in great detail.)

Or read it. I mostly listen when driving to the other side of the county to help grandma with stuff. So thats a solid two hours total with driving. There and back again as the Hobbits say.

Ringing in a New Year!

 

2020 was a turning point in more ways than one.

Brought Uplift Protocol into play. Enjoying old video games. Watching DC Comics burn. Finding out if I wanted Noble and Bright Settings I'd have to do it myself. Along with Uplifted Dogs.

I'm not the only one doing their part for dogs. 

We got:

As far as the steam sale goes: With xmas gifts comes much fun. 

BG3 was from Dad while CP 2077 was from my brother. I treated them to Steam cards as well. It helps to have a family filled with mostly gamers/dorks. 

So Ill have plenty on my plate to play. Might get Wasteland 3 at some point. Probably when it hits 25 or less bin. For 60 bucks I want to get 2-6 games. If that means I wait a few years, then so be it. 

Yeah, I will probably hate them forever for what they did to Superman but its a double edged sword. It got me away from the Milk Factory that is called Rose Colored Glasses. Esp when it comes to soulless corporations hoping for one last buck on nostalgia. 

SO yeah, have fun sinking in that YA self insert morass DC Comics. You could have gone the route of Manga but you just wanted to have your stupid ass soapbox like Marvel. Cape comics aren't supposed to be Watchmen. They are just supposed to be entertaining and fun. Goofy fun. Remember fun you pretentious hacks? From the looks of it, nope. Which is why the bloated corpse of the Hugos continues. Boring trite message fiction. For the fart huffing crowd. 

Yeah, glad the sad and rabid puppies stuff opened my eyes to that idiocy as well.

The only thing worth pirating from DC Comics is The Last God. (If that's your wheelhouse.) 

Yes, I say that to insult DC comics and what its editors want to shovel out to people. Manga is murdering your sorry asses. I'm just here with the marshmellows. My wallet has been healthier since I've left "established" IPs behind. 

Everything else is drek. Get the old stuff from the 80s and before 3rd party if you want. Cause its likely they don't give a shit about hobby shops. Remember: Don't feed them. Which is why I don't have Disney Plus. Which is why I don't have Netflix, which is why I don't have all sorts of streaming services. I have physical copies of the Gargoyles dvds. Which Diseny doesn't give a fuck about that series either. Thank goodness. A reboot would be woke claptrap anyways. Glad Tron isn't on the remake block either. Here, read this: It will get you away from IP rot Click!

I plan on making 2021 all about up and coming indies. Even if it doesn't get me insta clicks, I rather focus on replacing dead IPs. So journey outwards. Find other comics to read besides the usual suspects. They don't deserve your time, money or attention. Or find it on project gutenburg: Here

Just find something else to bring to the forefront rather than hoping that sinking IPs will change. They really won't. All you will get is scraps. Something to string you along before the next "Rey Muh Sue" happens. Yes, I know there's still arguments about it but she fits my definition of a Gary or Mary Sue/Stu. She doesn't need help from anyone. Rolls natural 20s on everything.

Book Promotion

 

 

Usually what catches my eye:

• How often do you spam promotions? If its every other post on your feed I eventually tune out. Make your social media a variety. Try to put recommendations on there that are closest to the type of wheelhouse you want to promote.
• If its romance primary: IE The MAIN DRAW WILL BE THE COUPLE IN AND OF ITSELF! Put "A Romantic Space Adventure" or "Romance then X genre." It will set the overall tone and tell me even if I want to pick it up. Its how I avoid most smutmance choices. You will get less readers who want to trash that wheelhouse if you do.

Because to be frank: Most romance isn't just the courtship or how they work as a couple. Its bed hopping and how many lovers in a port of call. It's why I gravitate towards older pulps. The endgame aspect had the main protag get together with the main romance interest. There wasn't Anita Blake X-rated BS going on.

My overall preferences:

Hero gets the happy ending, gets the mission done, gets the girl. That sorta thing. (Because the market is flooded with downer endings and "well that wasn't worth it!" adventures)

• I massively prefer upbeat endings. Even in Craptastic Worlds. 
• More sapient dogs/uplifted animals.
• The Science doesn't have to make actual sense. (IE Our World's Physics.)  It just has to be consistent with whatever systems you've made to the setting. 
• Likeable > Relatable because in this day and age relatable often means "Sad Sack Woke ID politics" protag to follow. Take Claire from CP 2077, she's trans, mentions it in passing during a mission, but she's likable. Not a walking billboard for whatever trans "issues of current year" I could give two shits about. I really don't want sermons from people in games or books or media. Make escapism happen. With whatever characters you like. Want representation that doesn't feel empty or forced? Aeon 14: Here 
• Heck, most of CP 2077s cast fits that bill. They are likable > relatable.

Guys are allowed to write women via visual description. Women do that to men in the fracking smutmances all the time. Male writers are just more honest about it. Help us readers find our wheelhouses or enough overlapping themes we enjoy. Love GRRM? Add his influence to your blurb. 

Want to attract readers like me? 

Mention Paragons of Virtue. Or OPTIMISTIC STORIES OF OLD! Or Superversive. Or "Do you hate sad sack protagonists? Navel gazing? MY book is the opposite of that!" Be very blunt. My kingdom for more Bright Futures and Genuine escapism!  

When you compare things to Firefly: Mention in what way. Are the characters cobbled together against an overwhelming foe? Is it a space western? Does it have the overall themes of Babylon 5: Ancient mysteries and old civilizations guiding the younger through ingrained manipulation? Is it a mix of that settings politics with face paced pew pew? 

How craptastic is your world? Mention the contrast. Does it have a paragon at the wheel trying to light the way to a better tomorrow? I have to get better with that in my own reviews. How is this related to X Y or Z for me. 

Galaxy Ascendant has characters built like B5s: Some have much brighter outcomes. They face insurmountable odds against a universe filled with ancient mysteries. The politics of the setting muck up everything. Go buy it: LIKABLE CHARACTERS EVERYWHERE! Here

Iceburg Ahead: Trad Woke Pub is Blind

Saving all these screen caps for posterity. Mostly because usually this kind of crowd will delete their tweets, block, chain block or mute everything.

Its funny how people react when you try to poke their bubbles. Its why I go out of my way to follow people I disagree with. I wonder if I can see if he has a patreon that makes him 13k a month like McGuire. Is he allowed to have that kinda avenue I wonder.

 

Think he'd put out his actual earning level? 

 Does he make retirment pension from his RX or Programming Background?

What does he actually take home in book earnings?

Funny how the capitalism he "fights" puts food into his mouth. Funny how Ultra Progressive dudes are pretty level demanding. Hand him what? Money for his books? Talk to his Hand? Nope, in fact based on his twitter those books wouldn't give me the escapism I want from Current Year Myopia.  

So I look to the past for real adventures. 

And yes, I know its not JUST comics Mr. Stross but all entertainment mediums that are poisoned. I wonder if he adds some of his funds to Ms. McGuire on her patreon. Since he hates capitalism so much he should feed all the other writers he wants to support with his VAST wealth of Book Writing Royalties. 

 Guess he's the "right" type of middle aged White Male allowed to prop up "Trad Pub" darlings. He might want to prescribe some humble pie to himself. My hands will never feed any of his works. His "Hand" mentality will only garner more woke politics clout. These guys hate us but want our hard earned cash. Don't Give it to Them. 

 

Entertain yourself first and foremost and leave Dead IPs and Woke Politics Clout Writers behind. 

And as always: Don't Give Money To People Who Hate You

YA: The Cesspool

 Yes, because when I was 10 I needed "Diversity." Riiight.

When I was in my teens, (13-17) I read COYA books, Goosebumps, The Hobbit. James and the Giant Peach, and Narnia.

They didn't contain sex, sexuality (From what I remember) or more "adult" themes like R-rated stuff, nudity, extreme violence, things like that. Those books were geared to kids. Or teens. Modern YA isn't made for 13-17 anymore. It's pretty much GoT when it comes to themes but has more Love Triangles everywhere. Based on what I can see of samples. Or 1 or 2 star reactions from parents. 

• Kids should just be Kids.
• Imho: 15+ is when parents need to sit them down and talk about intimacy and sex. Not the school, from the parents. 
  

This vid gets the basics down and why I avoid YA. Its made for 40 year old women. Plus even people with certain sympathies are getting tired of it.

 

More and more things want pre-teen kids looking into their sexuality. Its disturbing to me. And to most people I imagine. I think people get venerability and flaws mixed up as well.

I think YA in general has effected my biases against teen protagonists.

Gonna keep discussing the defects of YA. You can defend it if you want but I find that sub-genre lacking because of who it really targets rather than a way to get actual kids to read more. I am glad I grew up when I did, at least I had good shows, books and other media to feed my mind.

YA is cringe because its being used as a vehicle for Adults to relive X Y or Z. (Imho) Just look no further than Dead IP land. 

And now I know why people say just talk and don't worry about showing your face. People aren't there to see your face, they want information about whatever wheelhouses they enjoy.

See? Why must they put that in a ridiculous amount of YA when you can make an Adult Romance book with happy relationships? That's what I am doing with Uplift Protocol, its not YA. Its A superhero space opera. With all sorts of adults in healthy stable relationships where they trust each other.

Why is she compaining?

Why the long speech on twitters?

Where the heck does she live where 13k x 12= 156,000 a year isn't good enough? In Fl that would be massively awesome level of money. I'd be able to help so many with that level of funds.

Dude, she makes more in a month then what I make in about 2/3rds of a year. IE: A really good year will get me around 15-17.5k. 

No wonder Con Inc and the Woke Brigade cash in on the Mundane Manifesto, Victim Status Grifting and Complaining. That's where the money is for the moment.

Plus a short vid on a twitter thread that will probably get nuked but I am glad I am not in college or school anymore. With profs like this guy who would learn anything but hate and despair?

From the Shore of Booktube: Rhythm of War

Looking at booktube and its all about Rhythm of War but there's something....oh boy.

Listen, this is my opinion but don't have "sensitivity" readers for your books. People have diff. preferences and wheelhouses and not all books will appeal to all readers or even hit mainstream status.

 

In the opening portions, here's his whole setup:

To me, he should just have beta readers, people who help find typos, or genuinely enjoy the wheelhouse he provides. Since the whole aspect of censorship is in the forefront of most topics nowadays. To me that's why we don't get stuff like Gargoyles anymore. Or Astro Boy or even Jungle King Leo.

Imho if you have consultants on certain aspects, like if you want to get some pointers from special forces guys if your book is going to focus heavy on that, to me that kind of feedback is different from "This will reflect badly on X group I politically align with" sensitivity input.  

Be bold, write what you want and eventually you will find your audience. TO me, a writer has to write for themselves first. To maintain passion. But like Mass Effect 3's ending, keep in mind, what may be brilliant to you will fall flat with other people. 

That's why I am very upfront about what's going into Uplift Protocol.

Yes, the ending will be very corny happy. Just the way FL Woman wants it.  

Edit: I also wanted to add, to me Sensitivity readers are people who want the writer to include elements that validate them politically and to be "relatable sad sacks" but it doesn't serve the story whatsoever.

Culture War: Con Inc

 

 

Even if you don't create, you can still help, buy stuff that has timeless messages. Endless escapism, noble heroes, self sacrifice, those who exhibit virtues! Even if you don't do front-line culture battles, I know I don't, but you can still help. Support those making uplifting artworks so that LOTR/Narnia aren't the exceptions.

 

Just like this guy said: If I do this with any Uplift Protocol characters, please send many slaps to this FL woman's face.

A Basket

With everything that's happening: Eggs and Baskets are on my mind. Even Easter ones. :P

In comic land, with all areas getting hit, it wouldn't be wise to put all my reading eggs into one basket either. Amazon could have its own crisis with books and comics too. Comixology might not be around forever so in that event:

• Gonna start making flash drive backups of all my digital stuff. (Esp Invincible. A fair amount of comics from my comixology account are DRM free.)
• Put out feelers for alternative book and comic sources. (Use more used book stores/antique shops/hobby shops)
• Plan accordingly with finances to get through this and still support the things I love.

Industries aren't as robust as they claim most times. One hit somewhere usually derails the whole line.

• Get stuff through curb side pickup if needed. (Media/Food/Ect.)  
• Support Alternative Networks (In order to find genres/ect that I enjoy.)
• Direct via the Source

• Network with each other. Go around Diamond/DC and Marvel if you can. Buying all the garbage from them to get to the 10% that's still passable or worth a damn is killing you and the readership. 
• Alternative Source of Revenue. If you have to become a Hybrid store to meet bills, do it. 
• Offer Tabletop time slots to Hardcore Table Top enthusiasts. Some shops in Tampa FL are doing this. Not just pull boxes but different tier memberships for more perks/deals.
• Collectors: All those Number 1s arent worth it. Unless you have something that is a cultural artifact like Action Comics #1 or an equivalent, buying all the drek because it has a SHINY ONE on it doesn't really help your local shop. It forces them to buy 1000s of comics not worth a damn and that will see the 50 cent bin within a few months. (Because Marvel practices and DC practices too. For industry leaders they sure don't care that all their artists and writers will be out of a job within the next year if this keeps up.)
• The Comics Industry has some of the same issues that Dead Tree Publishing has in my Book Area of Fun. I really hope more shops don't go the way of Blockbuster. Or Borders, or Walden Books.
• Sustainability: Somehow western comics have to bring in new audiences without alienating their established base. I'm already in my mid 30s. And for my area, I'm one of the younger shoppers when I do go to my LCS. 

For the "Big Dogs" of the Industry:

• Unsold stuff from Marvel and DC: 100% returnable. In fact, it should be standard for all comic companies to the stores they ship to. That way it will cut down on the practices Marvel loves to shove onto shops, IE: Get/Buy 100 copies to get a variant. They cant hide the crap within the decent stuff that way.
• Stop forcing these shops to buy duds. Provide products based on area interest. Connecting Patrons with Books/Comics they want to Collect. 
• Find a way to put more comics in places other then hobby shops, then put local ads in those comics to lead them to shops in case a person wants to get even more involved. Growth from multiple sectors.  

 As for me, its time for more work. And more Orange Juice. Gotta get that Vitamin C in.

This whole virus event means more hours at work for me. (I will admit, I am slightly kinda tempted by that extra 1,000 dollars thing, if only to buy more hard working writers and comics creator stuff.)

My responsible side says if that does happen, to put it in savings, my nerd side says but "THINK! All those books....." To be honest, I'd probably put 800 in savings then go slightly giddy with 200 or so. Depending on bills and payday, most times I put aside a good 40-90 bucks a pay period to nerdy pursuits.

But like all things, I just plan on working, getting paid that way. 

Cause so far, my pharmacy chain is going on all cylinders and our store hours aren't shifting one bit when it comes to open/closing times. Some local grocery stores here are going 1 hr earlier for closing but that's so they can have more time to restock shelves. Based on what other people working there have said. 

But onward! To the nerdy things I enjoy.
