What's in A Wheel

Twitter has its drawbacks but the people I follow aren't one of them.

So some writer friends wanted to know what hooks me in.

First what I'm pretty burnt out on. If you love these things that's ok, this reader wants to find other things, in addition.

  • Nihilism/Navel Gazing
  • Pure Dystopia
  • Passive Protagonists
  • Only Slice of Life Stories (esp if they have tons of woke scold or act like 40-50 year old bitch ladies)
  • Asshole Main Characters
  • Flaws more important then Virtues (IE they must be super flawed to be relatable.)
  • Subverting Expectations: IE The Hero is a Nutcase and not Noble, breaking lore just because, handing over mantles to characters that don't even want the mantle.
  • I still enjoy some classics in spurts like Berserk and HP Lovecraft but I also want more high adventure on my plate that doesn't go to 11 in depression and darkness.
Its so prevalent that I find myself actively seeking other things for entertainment.  An example of what I am not looking for:

One is extremely boring slice of life with barely there sci fi paint. Pretty much if you took Firefly and made it all about talking heads around dinner tables or really "watch the paint dry" talks about fee fees. And Gender IDs ect. YAAAAAAAAWN. You are supposed to be space opera. Whatever. Dropped that series. I only spent 1.99 on it in a flash sale but even then I felt that is was too much.

You know what did slice of life in a fun way?

As for Anita: SHE A THOT! And a Know it All "Badass" dont need no Man Bitch. The first few books were popcorn fun then LKH divorced her first hubby, married her fan club president, then train wreaked her own series for IKEA level Porn descriptions.

But on to happy things:

What draws me into books.

  • Energetic openings. A mini mystery: Something that piques my interest of your setting or story.
  • Active Protagonists who don't avoid the call to interesting things.
  • Not everything has to be explained. Sometimes Hard Sci fi and others try too much to "What's behind the curtain." Personal preference though. Some like all the details explained.
  • Actual Heroic heroes and heroines.
  • For the love of God, Have some Optimism!
  • Fun for fun's sake. Not everything has to be super realistic in tone.
When it comes to comics I am pretty much looking for something similar but if the art and story seem pretty on point, Ill go outside my own preferences here and there. Its mostly due to just how much is out there. Finding what you want: then supporting it.

What I feel is hurting indies:

  • Blacklisting because not in lockstep with internet fame or central figures. Feels like that's how most movements loose momentum.
  • Fans will only see the squabbling, not the product you are making.
  • Not delivering on time due to inexperience in most cases
  • Bury the hatches and start networking properly.
  • We need central search engines to find worth while projects. Even on twitter stuff can get drowned out. Its why I am only gonna use minds to put up things I enjoy. No extra commentary, That way I have this blog and that as a go to for remembering projects and links.
In all honesty, this reader is gonna promote and read what she wants. No matter who hates who. As long as they arent "woke" ill give it a looksee. I'm not behind the guilt by association stuff. If a person has a product I love, I am gonna back it 1000%.
