Married to "Originality."

Some readers are on a quest for, "OMG THIS LOOKS SO ORIGINAL!"

No, its not. Nothing is wholly original. From the dawn of time we have been passing down stories. Its part of our cultural consciousness. What people might mean by original is a 2 cent "dash of different" take on the same old wheel.

Which isn't a bad thing. That's ok. As a writer: Don't give two shits if your idea is a magical unicorn of "new" ideas. It probably isn't. Again, that's alright. I think some get too caught up in "I must 100% bring something no one has ever seen before to the table."

No you don't. Stop worrying and just write. Who cares if someone else did something similar. We each bring our own little slant to the table on the same age old questions, themes, arcs, characters, settings ect. Hell, Superman came from myths his creator's enjoyed.

Stop fighting the wheel. Just roll with it. Humans are creatures of habit. We love what we love and hate what we hate. No two people will key in on the same things in a book. Its just our way. Originality of anything isn't key in my opinion. It's a writer's desire to pull their series or books out and get to work.

As a point: Uplift Protocol

  • Taking parts of B5 I enjoyed, Superman, Green Lantern, Sailor Moon, Star Wars, Star Trek, Narnia, LoTR, Sliders, Star Gate, Enemy Mine, Alien/Aliens, X-files, Star Ocean, Flash Gordon, Lensmen. So many more. Even bits of John Carter and Princess of Mars.
